Why Black Mamas Should Use BRAIN for Pregnancy Decision-Making

Pregnancy is an exciting journey, but it can also feel a bit overwhelming with all the decisions you need to make. Ever feel anxious and unsure about making the right choice?

That’s why your midwife bestie is here to tell you how to use your BRAIN—Benefits, Risks, Alternatives, Intuition, and Nothing. This tool will help you make the best choices for you and your baby.

Discover the Benefits

When you’re faced with a decision, start by looking at the benefits. What positive outcomes can come from this choice for you and your baby? If you’re deciding whether to have a certain test or procedure, ask your healthcare provider, “What are the benefits of doing this?” Knowing the benefits helps you see why this option might be good for you and your baby.

Quick Win:

  • Going to prenatal yoga can help you relax, sleep better, and prepare your body for labor. The benefits include feeling good physically, mentally, and emotionally. Plus, it’s a great way to meet other mamas and have some fun!

Uncover the Risks

Next, think about the risks. What are the possible downsides or dangers associated with this choice? Understanding the risks helps you make a balanced decision. Don’t be afraid to ask questions!

Think Twice:

  • If your provider suggests inducing labor, there are risks like a higher chance of needing more medical interventions, such as a cesarean section. Breaking this down further, induction might lead to a longer labor, increased pain, or the need for additional interventions. Ask how these risks could affect future pregnancies. For example, having a C-section with your current pregnancy might mean needing one for future births.

Explore the Alternatives

Always look at the alternatives. Are there other ways to get the same result? Sometimes there are less invasive options that might align better with your preferences and values.

Creative Solution:

  • If you’re worried about pain during labor, consider alternatives like water birth, hypnobirthing, or using essential oils. Each has its own benefits and risks, but they might be a better fit for what you want.

Trust Your Intuition

Trust your intuition, mama. You have GOD-GIVEN intuition. You know your body and baby better than anyone else. How do YOU feel about this decision? What is your gut telling you? Your gut feeling is a powerful tool and should not be left out of the decision-making process.

Gut Check:

  • If a suggested procedure doesn’t feel right to you, speak up. It’s okay to voice your concerns. Your intuition matters.

Consider Doing Nothing

Sometimes, doing nothing is an option too. This means waiting and seeing how things progress. It doesn’t mean ignoring the issue but giving yourself time to think and to make the best decision for you and your baby. Don’t forget your tribe—you don’t have to make decisions alone. Discuss with your partner, support person, or trusted friend.

Pause and Reflect:

  • If a non-urgent test is suggested, ask if you can wait and monitor the situation. This gives you more time to decide what’s best and get more information if needed. If you still feel rushed, tell them you need to pray about it first.

Bringing It All Together

Using BRAIN helps you make the best choices for you and your baby. It ensures you think about all parts of a decision—from the benefits and risks to your own feelings and the option of waiting.

Sometimes Black women are not being fully supported by their healthcare providers, which is why it’s crucial for you to ask questions for clarity and understanding. Even if your provider isn’t giving you the information readily, it’s okay to push for the answers you need and change your mind later. Your health and your baby’s health are the most important.

Remember, you’re not alone. Download our free BRAIN template to use at your appointments and doctor visits. It will help you remember to ask the right questions and make informed decisions.
